Pontefract
travelled to Heath Rugby Union Club to compete against Barnsley in
this years vase final.
With
heavy rain at the start, Pontefract had to dig deep as Barnsley
applied early pressure, superb defence from Pontefract’s pack led
by James Brownsword, Ben Morris, Mick Padget Jack Plant Tom Elmey,
and Matt Dunnell kept the division four side at bay.
With
the Barnsley half’s throwing up high ball Richard Hossack
Pontefract’s fullback showed his excellent handling and positional
kicking time after time in only his second outing in the fullback
slot and continually thwarting the Barnsley attack.
Pontefract
now started to make inroads into the Barnsley half with James Fox
giving good ball to Chris Sant who was ever probing with some superb
touchline kicks,
The
Pontefract line –out was working well with Adam Rivers and the
impressive Ben Morris taking good line ball or disrupting the
Barnsley effort.
A loose
ball from Barnsley, and kick through by James Fox saw Jacob Anderton
gather and supply Ben Morris who drove to the line only to be held up
Pontefract
were penalised in there own half for killing the ball and Barnsley
opened the scoring with a penalty from twenty five metres. Both sides
tried to dominate, but Pontefract’s backs were now coming into the
game and good handling from Craig White, Nathan Spencer, Nathan Grace
and James Armstrong constantly pressured Barnsley’s backs into
errors.
Half time
came, and the rain continued. Score 3-0.
Pontefract
started the second half with Jack Clayton replacing James Armstrong
due to illness. With Pontefract’s Coach Owen Peacock issuing his
words of wisdom. Pontefract re-started in a higher gear with good
rugby from both backs and forwards, Pontefract were now starting to
take control, a passage of play saw Jack Clayton race over in the

from the touchline Pontefract‘s double looked possible, having
already been crowned champions by winning there 5 East league
Barnsley’s
discipline was starting to fray and were punished with there first
sin-bin.
Pontefract
made substitutions with Dan Curtis coming on for Craig White.
Both
sets of forwards were defending superbly, with the conditions
worsening, and with play shifting from one side to the other.

there second sin-binning, Dan Curtis converted from thirty metres to
give Pontefract a seven point lead with fourteen minutes to play. The
Pontefract pack dug deeper and defended superbly, Ben Morris was

The
fourteen men continued to keep out the Barnsley side forcing errors
and ret-aining good
ball possession, which in turn crowned another great team performance
from all eighteen on duty.
No
man of the match was awarded individually, but all Pontefract‘s
players can be proud of there efforts in a very tough game against a
very good side.

After good handling work from the backs space was created for utility pack
man Adam Rivers to slide through to score a try converted by Chris Sant. After
a
good return kick by man of the match Richard Hossack playing his first game at
full back applied pressure on the opposition causing them to fumble the ball on
many occasions giving pontefract the possession they needed. The home side

Pontefract’s
unbeaten run came to an end at Darlington Mawden Park, in this
National area semi-final with a rule change before kick off (NO

the ball into Mawdens half with good defence from the Home side.
Mawden used the rolling subs well, keeping the pack fresh, Ponte with
only one forward in reserve did not have the same options. Half
time 7-5
Chris
Sant had to be led from the field after a clash of heads, and the
re-shuffle saw Luke Czirok , change with Adam Rivers Craig White
moved to centre and Mathew Hossack move to fly-half. Luke Czirok was
mysteriously penalised and the resulting penalty saw Mawden score
under the posts making the score 14-5.
From
the kick off Mathew Hossack received the ball and sent Ben Dunn-Birch
in to score 14-10 and Ponte were starting to gain some momentum
strong running from Tom Elmey took Ponte back into Mawdens half, but
continued penalties and handling errors allowed Mawden to gradually
drive there way back into Ponte’s twenty two, and after some
resolute defence Mawden scored wide out and now led 21-10, after the
conversion.
With five
minutes remaining Ponte’s Ben Dunn-Birch set of on an eighty metre
run jinking his way past four Mawden defenders and planting the ball

07/10/07 Pontefract v Doncaster 2nds
After last weeks winning performance
against Morley away it was the turn of
Doncaster 2nds to visit
Moor
Lane and face a full
strength Pontefract.
From the very first whistle this match
looked evenly matched as both sides put in strong running and tackling. The
packs were evenly matched in size and strength and it was clear that Pontefract
would have to be at their best.
After 7 minutes Jordan Plange got on the
end of turnover ball and ran through a gaping hole in the
Doncaster defence which up
until that time had remained strong and compact. This opened Pontefract's
account and seemed to settle their nerves. A short while later, a well worked
blindside move involving Ben Morris and Luke Xerok led to Pontefract's second.
Despite going behind,
Doncaster pressed hard and had many opportunities to cross the Pontefract
line, but the determined defence of Chris Sant, Tom Plant and in particular Nathan
Grace thwarted their efforts. Indeed from one turnover ball close to the
Pontefract line Jordan Plange sprinted the full length of the pitch to score
his second and Pontefract's third try.
At the turnaround, Pontefract continued
with greater confidence and soon had their fourth try with speedster, Ben
Dunn-Birch,outpacing
Doncaster's defence cutting a very acute line through. Unstoppable!
The final try was duly delivered by Nathan
Spencer who had worked hard all match for his reward.
Doncaster's heads had gone down and so with them the chance of scoring any
points. Man of the Match went jointly to Jordan Plange and Jack Plant .
Next week sees Pontefract's unbeaten team
travel to Pocklington. Bring it on! Final Score Pontefract 31 Doncaster 0

to Oli Barker coming on as replacement.
Hull had no answer to the power of the Pontefract pack with James Brownsword,
Jack Plant and Luke Zerok rampant, keeping the ball close in and then freeing
the back line with Jordan Plange, Adam Rivers and James Armstrong outpacing
their opposite numbers time after time. Orchestrating every move was Chris

Hull's winger. Soon after, Nathan Spencer crashed over the line adding
yet more points to the score. Chris Santi added another try with some
individual brilliance, whilst Dalton Marshall added yet another score helped by
a strong drive by the pack. A piece of brilliant individual skill saw Adam
Rivers dance down the touchline for his most improbable try watched by a
bemused
Hull defence. A
brief flurry of an attack led to a consolation try but it was all too much for
Hull. The
final piece of the encounter saw Man of The Match Chris Santi dive under the
