Pontefract entertained Old
Crossleyans in North 2 East for the first time in a few seasons.
Seeking revenge for an early season away defeat the home side were
well up for this return fixture. With good pitch conditions and a
decent Moor Lane crowd a fine contest was anticipated. Pontefract
made few changes and the Crocs had a collection of unidentified
players combined with known stalwarts such as Andy Daly and Co.
Pontefract kicked off and were
quickly into their stride. A succession of early turnovers allowing
the home side to settle and apply some early pressure. Big Paul Novak
was first over the whitewash after good early ball from Fletcher to
Dean who also added the conversion. The early exchanges provided a
Barbarian style for the spectators with both sides shifting the ball
about well. With Nick Dykes making serious yards in the middle Crocs
had to work hard to contain the threat. Unfortunately for the
visitors their first spell of possession was spoiled by an excellent
interception from Nev Bateman who strode way to plant the ball under
the posts. Dean goaled to give a 14-0 lead to Ponte.
The visitors who had a big pack on
show then came back strongly. Laverick, Smith and Cahill in the front
row having their work cut out to match the visitors. Some unforced
errors then allowed Crocs blindside Mark Thomas to score in the
corner for an unconverted try. Shoddy work from the home side.
Ponte came straight back up field
and a big drive from youngster Jake Brady led to a penalty for
pulling the maul down. Dean took the 3 points to extend the lead
again.
With Ponte then pressing again big
Matty Williams, Capt for the day, lobbed a long speculative pass,
which was easily intercepted by Crocs James Mallard who raced 80
metres to score. With the conversion added half time came at 17-10
to Ponte.
After the break Crossleyans
equalised almost immediately through James Wainright, the conversion
making it 17 apiece. Andy Dean then added another penalty to regain
the lead for the home side.
With some great open rugby Ponte
stretched away firstly through a converted Rich Scott try, and
similar from Nick Cooper. Good work on both occasions from Carl
Smith, Rob Novak and Eves.
Two late sin binnings allowed the
visitors to capitalise with two late tries from Stuart Hill and Chris
Duffy and ensure a nail-biting finale. Ponte held on however to take
the points and guarantee N2 E status next season.
An evenly contested game played in good spirit and
as ever a pleasure to host our traditional foes from Halifax.
Final score Pontefract 34- Old Crossleyans 29
19-01-08 Pontefract vAldwinians
Pontefract entertained Aldwinians at Moor
Lane in a game that probably confirmed status in N2E for next season. The
visitors have struggled this season not having a victory to their name thus far
and an upset was never on the cards. On a pitch in remarkably good condition
despite the recent weather Pontefract had Eves and Cahill on the bench with a
very strong starting XV.
The early part of the game was marred by
errors from both teams. All the players struggling to keep a grip on the
slippery ball. Two penalties to Dean were poor fare for Ponte in the opening
exchanges. A penalty and try from lock Andy Ormrod giving the visitors an early
lead. As in the corresponding fixture away Aldwinians played a spoiling game
and the home pack led well by Carl Smith and Jonny Lowery had to work hard to
gain ascendancy.
Andy Dean took another three points to put
Ponte in front and then the pack began to gain a stranglehold. Nick Dykes put
Nev Bateman over before the break to make the half time score 16-8. A scrappy 40 minutes for the home
side.
After the interval Ponte upped the effort
and played some excellent rugby. Nick Dykes scored first after good work from
the home pack and Rich Fletcher, Dean adding the extras. Dean added a further
penalty shortly after to stretch the lead to 26-8
Next over was Rich Fletcher after good work
at the base of a now dominant scrum from Jonny Lowery. Dean again adding the
conversion. Ponte then rang the changes with Eves, Cahill and Nick Cooper
coming on. The visitors regrouped however and hit back with an immediate score
near the posts for their final score.
Pontefract then scored in rapid succession
with two tries claimed by Eves, one supporting Matty Williams and a second from
the Carl Smith catch and drive ploy.
The game was marred somewhat by an injury
to Kiwi who suffered a dislocated shoulder putting him out for the rest of the
season. Young Jake Brady can also feel hard done by for a yellow card for
getting himself punched off the ball.

5/01/08 Pontefract v Gateshead AWAY
Pontefract
returned to league rugby after a three-week break with a trip up the A1 to Gateshead. Following two top
draw performances before the Christmas period Pontefract begun 2008 with high
hopes of continuing the rich vain of form. A three-week lay off with the usual
distractions appears to have had a detrimental effect however.
Pontefract began
the match looking lethargic and ring rusty. The home side, who are at the wrong
end of the table, looked fired up and put the visitors on the back foot from
the start. With a blustery wind second and third phase ball was a problem all
afternoon for both sides and the game was not much of a spectacle for the Ponte
faithful braving the late bus.
An early penalty
for a ludicrous penalty against Rich Scott when an opponent pushed him over the
ball gave Gateshead a three-point lead. Pontefract came back and probably scored with
the match official unsighted after good work from Carl Smith, Eves and hooker
Andy Smith. Gateshead cleared and worked their way up field to eventually score at the
corner, winger Lewis Carr doing well to
squeeze in
Pontefract came
straight back and Rich Fletcher was then denied a try, the referee judging the
ball had been dislodged as he went over. Andy Dean then got Ponte on the
scoreboard with a well-taken penalty.
Ponte then had a
reasonable spell with Carl Smith and Rich Scott to the fore, Gateshead number 8 Paul Ingham
receiving a yellow for killing the ball under pressure. Pontefract failed to
capitalise however. A further disallowed effort from Nev Bateman failing to
touch the ball down correctly was all the visitors had to show for their
efforts.
Ben Stevenson
added a further unconverted try before an exchange of penalties finalised the
score line.
Pontefract a bit disappointing in this
display, best from Paul Novak who carried the ball well, Rich Scott who was in
the thick of things throughout, Jake Brady who continues to improve and Martin
Hooker showing some dynamism at open side.

15/12/07 Pontefract v Hartlepool Rovers
Pontefract were one of a handful of clubs
managing to stage a game in Yorkshire this weekend due to the weather. With the
Moor Lane pitch well maintained and with a good grass cover this game was
played in absolutely ideal mid winter conditions. A decent crowd at Moor Lane
saw Pontefract dominate from start to finish and consolidate 5th position in
the league in doing so.
Pontefract welcomed back Derek Eves at 8
and fielded a strong bench in Nick Cooper, Martin Hooker, and Dave
Laverick. From the kick off Pontefract
looked fired up and took the game straight to the visitors. A score after only
3 minutes from big prop Matt Williams who charged onto a short ball 2 yards out
set the tone for the first half. Dean added the easy conversion and a penalty
shortly afterwards extending an early 10 point lead.
Pontefract then put in some sterling work
up front to keep pressure on the visitors, Rich Maw, Andy Smith and Williams to
the fore. After 20 minutes a pick up from Eves at the base of a scrum supported
by Jonny Lowerey and Rich Scott put Carl Smith behind the defensive line. Eves
ever alert to the opportunity supported and was over near the posts giving an
easy opportunity for Dean to tag the extras. At 17-0 the visitors looked to be
in for a tough afternoon. After a very strong burst in midfield by Dykes a
further penalty at the breakdown was awarded to Ponte and Dean neatly chipped
the goal to make it 20 nil.
Hartlepool then had a decent passage of
play and made good yards with some dynamic pick and drives. After a move
amongst the forwards gaining nearly fifty metres the visitors scrum half nipped
over to score out wide. The missed conversion was the final attempt by the
visitors to trouble the scoreboard. Another Dean penalty just before half time
closed the half at 23-5
After the break the game was much tighter
with the visitors forwards applying some serious pressure. The game became a
bit of a midfield arm wrestle for much of the half. With 20 minutes to go
Pontefract rang the changes, Nick Cooper coming on the wing, Dave Laverick at
prop and Martin Hooker introducing some pace and aggression at open side. The
changes had an immediate impact with Andy Metcalfe putting a very neat chip
through for Cooper to race through pick up and side step the defence to score
near the posts. Nice work from Metcalfe having a very solid game at centre. The
first touch of the ball for Nick Cooper also allowing him to showcase his
obvious talents.
The final score was from speedster Nev Bateman
on the wing. Running strongly onto a ball spun wide from Rich Fletcher Bateman
raced over unopposed to close the game at 35-5.A last minute uncalled for punch
from the visiting full back, who had dropped numerous balls and become
frustrated, gave the referee the opportunity to finish the game.
A strong Ponte performance with an
excellent display from all the pack, Paul Novak outstanding at full back.
Final score Pontefract 35- Hartlepool Rovers 5.
1/12/07 Pontefract v Morpeth Away
Pontefract travelled away to Morpeth for
this N2E league game with a much-changed side from the previous week. Derek
Eves was absent so Jonny Lowery made a welcome if premature return from long
term injury to fill the void. Nick Dykes, Nicky Cooper and Tristan Hibbert came
into the backs, Andy Dean moved up to fly half, Martin Hooker making a first
appearance at wing forward. Matt Williams moved up to prop in the absence of
the outstanding Dave Laverick. With Captain Simon Spears sidelined Rich
Fletcher took over motivation for the day. The bench had an experienced look
with Steve Close and Rory Duffield taking the leather studded boots out of the
cupboards.
Pontefract started aggressively and took
the game to the home team. Morpeth as usual had a big pack on display and the
visitors set about a game plan of disruption and chaos from the kick off. Dean
scored first points with a well-taken penalty after the home pack killed the
ball. The same player narrowly missed a second chance minutes later. The home
side then came back into it and a series of big hits from Matty Williams
assisted in stemming the tide. After 15 minutes home winger Hill careered in at
the corner for the first try. The difficult conversion was missed.
Pontefract replied swiftly with Dean making
an outside break from a scrum to supply Nev Bateman with the space to scorch
over in the corner. Again the difficult conversion was missed.A further Dean Penalty
attempt was pushed wide by the wind, and the home side then worked their way
into the Ponte half from the restart. A failed attempt to clear the ball by
Dave Thorpe gave Morpeth winger Martin West the chance to level the scores
squeezing in at the corner for the try. Thorpe a bit unlucky with the ball kept
in play by the strong wind. At 10-10 the game was turning into a thrilling
contest between two evenly matched sides.
With Jake Brady taking the ball up strongly
and Martin Hooker consistently in support Pontefract showed some gritty
determination to get on top. Morpeth got their noses in front next however with
a penalty for handling in the ruck to end the half at 13-10 to the home side..
After the interval Nev Bateman quickly got
his second score after good work by Paul Novak, 13-15 after a failed conversion
by Dean
The crowd witnessed an outstanding game of
rugby in the second half. The match played at full throttle by both sides went
from end to end. Morpeth extended their lead with a nicely worked try. Rich
Scott was then yellow carded and Morpeth took full advantage scoring another
try whilst he was off to make it 23-15.
Ponte were not to be thwarted though and
came right back up field. Nick Cooper put big Paul Novak into space and he took
full advantage to score the try and close the gap to three points. Watson for
Morpeth was then yellow carded for persistent infringements and it was
Pontefracts turn to take advantage. Bateman claiming his hat trick after Rich
Fletcher put him into space to give Ponte the lead at 23-25.
With a minute left Morpeth took the lead
through a Jenks penalty and it appeared the game was over. The visiting pack
had other ideas, Dave Thorpe made a great half break and nearly got over the
whitewash, the recycled ball came to Bateman who neatly clipped the drop goal
and claim victory. An outstanding team effort by Pontefract,
man of the match to the mercurial Bateman, special mention to Lowery, Fletcher
and Hooker on debut.
Final score Morpeth 26-Pontefract 28.
24/11/07 Pontefract v Durham
Pontefract entertained high flyers Durham at Moor Lane in
decent conditions and on a firm pitch. Another below par crowd witnessed a
mismatch of a contest with the visitors dominating proceedings throughout.
Pontefract without skipper Simon Spears
(shoulder), star centre Matty Hargreaves (torn muscle) and big packman Johnny
Lowery welcomed Tim Williamson back at centre after a long lay off.
The first ten minutes were evenly contested
but thereafter a procession of unanswered scores by the visitors closed the
game by half time. With a lead of 21-0 at the turnaround Durham cruised the
second half despite a big effort from the home pack.
The only consolation score for Ponte was
inevitably from flying winger Nev Bateman at the corner after 60 minutes.
A final score of 43-5 did not flatter Durham who could
have scored more. The visitors pack dominated at line out and their back row
were first to every breakdown. The Pontefract pack worked determinedly to hold
their own in the tight set piece with Maw, Smith and Laverick to the fore but
it was an uphill struggle all game.
Pontefract cannot take much from the game
and seemed completely out of sorts across the field. Although Durham are
undoubtedly a quality side who will push West
Hartlepool all the way Pontefract will be
disappointed with this display.
Final Score Pontefract 5 DurhamCity 43
10-11-07Pontefract v Hartlepool (Away)
Pontefract travelled up the A1 to Hartlepool with a
much-changed line-up to previous weeks. Rich Taylor making his first appearance
for some time at prop, Paul Novak at centre with brother Rob on the wing, Andy
Metcalfe at fly half and Simon Spears making a welcome return at full back.
Dave Laverick, Johnny Fradgely, and
Tristan Hibbert on the bench.
Despite
starting strongly Pontefract fell behind to a 19-6 deficit. Scorers for the
home side Paul Kirton and Darren Smith with fly half Chris Stinty adding the
penalties and conversions. Despite the score Pontefract were well in the game
with the forwards doing well in a physical encounter up front. Rich Taylor was
replaced early in the first half by Dave Laverick after twisting his back
engaging at the scrummage. Laverick completing the holy trinity with Andy Smith
and Rich Maw was quickly into his usual dynamic destructive self.
Pontefract
then started to claw their way back in. Dean adding a couple of penalties
before a penalty try was awarded after Dean himself was tackled before
receiving the pass with the line wide open. The conversion brought the score to
19-13 at half time. After the
break Pontefract started very strongly and took the game to the home side. Nev
Bateman thought he was over but his foot had touched the whitewash. Andy dean
then closed the gap with a neat drop goal before Simon Spears left the field
with a nasty looking shoulder injury replaced by young Hibbert. Paul Novak
scored to give the visitors the lead for the first time after good work by Rich
Scott and scrum half Fletcher. Pontefract never then looked like losing and first Dean with a penalty
and Metcalfe with a drop goal closed out the game.
All away
wins valuable in this league and deserved victory for Pontefract to move them
up one place in the standings. Best for Ponte Brady, Andy Smith, Rich Scott,
Matt Williams up front and Metcalfe and Paul Novak in the backs.
Final score Pontefract 29-Hartelpool Rovers 19.
3/11/07 Pontefract v Gateshead ( Home)
With fair
weather and the pitch in good order Pontefract had an opportunity to
consolidate league position in this home game against a true North East team in
Gateshead. Fielding an unchanged side from the previous game Pontefract
entered the game brimming with confidence.
From the kick
off the home side had the advantage in both possession and territory. The
visitors as expected had a big pack and tried to keep the ball tight. With
Derek Eves his normal effervescent self Rich Scott and the improving young Jake
Brady Pontefracts back row looked to shift the ball at every opportunity.
Early strong defence from Rich Maw, Carl Smith and Andy Smith around the
fringes helped blunt the heavier visitors pack.
First on the
score sheet were Gateshead after prop Matt Williams was caught offside. David Kell adding the
3 points. Pontefract came straight back, Eves and Brady combining to set up a
half break from Andy Dean who found Johnny Fradgely on his shoulder to take the
scoring pass. Dean added the extras for a 7-3 lead at half time.
After the break
Pontefract took control and a penalty for holding on after a long kick and
chase allowed Dean to add a further 3points. Another 3 quickly followed this
when the visitors pulled the scrummage down.
Pontefract then
lost experienced centre Nick Dyke injured in a tackle. Young Tristan Hibbert
appearing off the bench. Hibbert quickly made his mark-releasing winger Nev
Batemen in style for the pacy winger to score in the corner. At 20-3 the game
looked secure for the home team.
Gateshead never gave up and hit back with a smart try from scrum half Kell
who also added the conversion. Pontefract immediately replied with a well-taken
try from centre Metcalfe and no doubt the home side thought the game was won at
25-10. Gateshead had other ideas and upped their effort for the final minutes. A
neat chip saw winger Karl Morgan cross for an unconverted try quickly followed
by a similar effort by opposite winger Andy Grey. The conversion closed the gap
to 25-22. With the obvious last minute penalty the visitors snatched a draw at 25-25.
Full credit to Gateshead for playing to the
end. Definitely a point given away by Pontefract who were guilty of complacency
at the end.
With some players now ready to return
after injury Pontefract will look forward to consolidating league position.
Next week a tough away fixture at Hartlepool Rovers looms.
Final Score Pontefract 25 Gateshead 25
27-10-07 Pontefract v
Aldwinians Away
Pontefract made their first ever visit to
Aldwinians near Manchester for this North 2 East fixture. A rare excursion for
the Pontefract faithful into Lancashire. Pontefract made a number of changes after the late withdrawal of
influential prop Rich Maw and nasty buttock injury to elusive centre Matty
Hargreaves. Paul Novak came in at full back with brother Paul returning on the
wing and Nev Bateman moving to the other flank. Up front Matt Williams moved up
from second row to temporary prop and John Fradgeley came in at lock. With Andy
Dean at stand off the visitors had a much-changed team from that running West
Hartlepool close last week.
The home side started well and blind side
Ben Marsland scored an early try after confusion in the Pontefract defence
despite a valiant attempt by Paul Novak to prevent the score. James Worral
converted to give Aldwinians a 7-point advantage early in the piece.
Pontefract then had to dig deep and despite
not playing particularly well held their own till halftime with no further
score. The forwards did manage to get over the try line from a catch and drive
but failed to get the ball to ground. Two possible penalty attempts were
spurned and field position taken instead.
After the break the home side were first to
score after Rich Scott was penalised at the ruck for hands in. Worral took the
three to stretch the lead to ten points. With Eves directing Pontefract came
straight back and Paul Novak made a half break before cleverly kicking behind
the defence for Nev Bateman to outpace the cover and race over. Andy Dean
converted to close the gap to 10-7
Pontefract continued to press and a series
of infringements from the home side gave Dean the chance to level with a
well-taken penalty. From here on Pontefract always looked the winners and a
further Dean Penalty sealed the important away win.
Not their best display this season but
credit to Pontefract for sticking at it when things werent going well. A gutsy
display from the home side that had several players returning. Some unpleasant
comments from a minority of spectators on the touchline marring an otherwise
well contested game.
Final score Aldwinians 10 Pontefract 13
22/10/07 Pontefract V West Hartlepool
Pontefract returned to league action
against early season title contenders West
Hartlepool. With conditions at Moor Lane
absolutely perfect both sides put on a show of uncompromising rugby for the
surprisingly small crowd.
From the kick off West Hartlepool began
aggressively and it was clear that the visitors big pack was going to take some
subduing. Pontefract welcoming back Andy Smith in the front row held firm and
the game evened up with no side having a clear advantage in the loose play or
territorially, Wests holding sway at the scrummage. First try went to the
visitors through Prop Mike Robinson after a knock on by young flanker Jake
Brady surrendered field position. With the conversion missed Pontefract came straight
back up field from a short kick off. Good work by Rich Scott and Derek Eves
allowed Rich Fletcher to supply fellow half back Andy Metcalfe running straight
to break the tackle and cross for the try. Andy Dean missed the conversion.
Leaving the score at 5 apiece.
Pontefract then lost elusive centre Matt
Hargreaves after a mazy run left him concussed at the bottom of a ruck. Young
Tristan Hibbert came on at full back with Bateman moving to wing.
With slow ball for both sides the game
developed into a tight arm wrestle. Pontefract doing well at lineout and
driving mauls, Wests having the edge at the scrummage. Half time arrived with
no further score after missed penalty attempts from both teams.
After the break Pontefract started brightly
and took an early lead with a Dean penalty after Wests pulled down a maul.
After a number of such penalties and warning given the attacking position
probably merited a yellow card. West Hartlepool came straight back and snatched the lead with a try from centre Greg
Edwards. A missed tackle in midfield with good support allowing Wests to get
behind the home defence for the first time.
Dean then kicked a further penalty to
narrow the gap at 11-12 and set up a tight finish.
Pontefract immediately squandered a golden
opportunity at an attacking scrummage, Carl Smith was caught offside at the
resultant ruck and West cleared their lines. Play then went up field and after
another missed tackle centre field John Boatman scored to secure the win for
the visitors.
Pontefract ended the game on the attack but
couldnt break the stubborn West defence. The visitors probably deserving their
win.
Solid game of rugby played in excellent
spirit again well refereed. Best for Pontefract were Bateman, Eves, and Brady.
Final
score Pontefract 11-West Hartlepool 18
06/10/07Pontefract
v Aspatria (away)
Pontefract took the long journey to the North West for
this North2 East game against early season league leaders Aspatria. The clubs
have never met before at any level and this was a journey into the unknown.
Pontefract made a series of changes with
Matty Williams returning at lock, Jake Brady moving to blindside Jonny Lowery
to 8 and Derek Eves moved to open side. Rob Novak came in for his first league
appearance on the wing and big Andy Smith came onto the bench after his long
lay off after a broken ankle
Pontefract made a good solid start against
the bigger home pack. The Aspatria backs from the start gave the impression of
pace and experience. First points for a penalty at the tackle went to Aspatria
scrum half Clegg.
The home side set the pace and applied
early pressure but with Eves controlling things Pontefract were steady across
the paddock. First try went to Aspatria centre Steve Davidson converted by
Clegg with a riposte by way of a penalty from the boot of Andy Dean.
Pontefract then got moving and with Rich
Maw and Dave Laverick showing great controlled aggression the pack began to
gain the upper hand. From a set piece attacking line out Pontefract scored a
trademark rolling maul try through Eves. Smith, Lowery and Brady doing the hard
work. Dean converted to level at 10-10
Next over was Aspatria full back Miller
with an unconverted try at the corner. Lapse of concentration from the visitors
partially to blame. A penalty stretched the lead before Ponte scored a push
over try from an attacking scrum, Eves claiming the points. A further try by
Davidson gave the home side a 25-15 cushion but Pontefract came straight back
and another attacking line out resulted in a replica of the first try again
claimed by Eves but a worthy pack effort. No goal and half time score of 25-20 to Aspatria.
After the break an early penalty from Dean
closed the gap. Mathew Hargeaves then made a good break to supply Metcalfe who
put young Dan walker in at the corner. Pontefract led at 28-25 and looked good
for the victory.
Aspatria were not to be denied and scored a
late try through Davidson and a final penalty to seal the win.
Ponte will be disappointed with the loss
after scoring five good tries and looking the better side for much of the
second half. Plenty to be pleased with after this display after a long journey
northwards.
Final
score Aspatria 35-Pontefract 28.
29/09/07 Pontefract v York
Pontefract entertained York after their
joint promotion last year in this eagerly anticipated North 2 East league game.
With a good pitch and fair conditions a fast open game between these evenly
matched teams was anticipated.
From the off York were quickly
into their stride and a short kick off caused early problems for the home side.
Young Danny Walker making his home 1
st team debut was penalised for
holding on and Nick Ventress kicked the three points to open the scoring.
Pontefracts pack then began to make
inroads and their impressive mauling technique of recent weeks began to have an
impact. From a penalty kick for territorial position Pontefract had a
well-worked move off the top for Andy Metcalfe to supply bustling centre Nick
Dykes with the space to crash over under the posts. Andy Dean as reliable as
ever and recovered from injury added the two extras.
The home pack looked impressive with Rich
Maw, Dave Laverick and in particular Jonny Lowery muscling up to the visitors.
A bit of loose play for the first time allowed Ventress to score an easy try
and put the visitors in front. An own goal for the home side effectively.
Pontefract came straight back and from the
quick restart the visitors were unorganised and gave away a penalty for
interference. Dean kicked a superb penalty to put the home side back in the
lead. Both sides then had decent passages of play with the game moving from one
end to the other. Pontefract had a try disallowed after a series of
infringements by the visitors with no advantage being played. The sustained
pressure told however with Eves crossing under the posts after a superb reverse
pass from Rich Fletcher at scrum half. The goal was added by Dean and from here
Pontefract looked to be the best team. A late penalty for the visitors and the
half time score was Pontefract 17 York 11. The game after the break was see saw affair
with both sides having good position and possession for periods. The home
defence was outstanding at times and York had to work
tremendously hard going forward. A good forward drive however led to a second
score for the visitors to narrow the gap again after 50 mins.
A second try for Eves then came after
excellent line out work from Parry, Smith, Brady, Scott and Lowery. A set piece
move of some quality much appreciated by the crowd. The kick bounced back off
the post and Pontefract led by 28-18. Matty Williams then replaced the hard
grafting Carl Smith and added some weight and impetus to the forward effort.
It was York who scored next through Sam
Arkle in the centre with an excellent effort near the corner involving numerous
passes. Ventress goaled to set up a tense finale with the score at 28-25.
Pontefract had the final say through Dean with a penalty for offside to secure
the points for the home side.
A great advert for junior rugby between two
goods sides giving their all. Best for Ponte Eves, Brady, and Dean. Mentions in
despatches for Fletcher the pack and all the players for the spirit in which
the game was played. Also a mention for the referee who was excellent
Final Score Pontefract 31 York 25
Saturday 22/09/07 Pontefract v Carlisle
Pontefract recorded their first win in
North2 East against visitors from the far North West in Carlisle.
Pontefract were tested early by the gritty
visitors and stern defence was the order of the day in the first quarter. An
early penalty for the visitors saw them take the lead after Rich maw was
unlucky to be penalised when he was trapped on the wrong side. Home pressure
then saw Pontefract pressing before a loose pass was intercepted and the
visitors stand off scampered away to score near the posts. A similar pattern to
recent weeks with Pontefract leaking silly points when in attacking positions.
Pontefracts forwards then warmed to the
task and began to gain the upper hand. Mathew Hargreaves got the first try
after good work from Paul Novak. Dean converted and Pontefract were back in it.
With Rich Fletcher prompting and Eves orchestrating Pontefract were straight
back at the visitors. A dubious forward pass call after a superb half break by
Eves then prevented youngster Hibbert scoring his maiden first team try.
Rich Scott, Jake Brady, Jonny Lowery were
all-prominent in the Pontefract pack who definitely had the edge in the forward
tussle. No further points at half time allowed the visitors a 3-point interval
lead.
After the break Pontefract were the
dominant side with a 19 to 3 second half tally. First over was Paul Novak with
a barnstorming run to score near the posts. Dean adding the extras. A penalty
for the visitors at the breakdown closed the gap and then Pontefract took a
tight grip. Nev Bateman scored his customary try after good work from Metcalfe
at stand off. A typically well-worked line out then allowed Dave Laverick to
claim the try form the resulting drive and finalise the scoring.
Pontefract continued to press up to the
final whistle and thoroughly deserved this victory. Best for the home side Eves
up front and Novak at full back.
Final score Pontefract 26-Carlisle 13.
15/09/07 Pontefract v Old Crossleyans
Pontefract travelled to Halifax for their
second game in North 2 East. Crossleyans enjoyed a successful year in last seasons
campaign and a
Pontefract introduced young gun Tristan
Hibbert at fly half and Paul Novak on the wing the only changes from last week.
Daniel Walker came onto the bench for his first squad appearance.
Pontefract started well taking the game to
the home side with a series of penetrating drives and quick ball recycled. The
Crocs backs strayed offside and Nev Bateman kicked the first points from the
resulting penalty after 5 minutes. Pontefract continued to press and two
further penalty attempts drifted wide.
A loose pass from the visitors led to
Crossleyans pressure and stand off Chris Seymour slotted a neat drop goal to
level the scores.
Pontefract came straight back and Rich Fletcher
at Scrum half supplied the ball for Nick Dykes to make a half break. Derek
Eaves supporting crashed over to score the first try. Bateman again missed the
goal kick and 8 points had been squandered early in the piece. Pontefract were
straight back at the home side and only enthusiastic home defence prevented
Pontefract scoring again. A poor pass right on the Crocs try line was
intercepted and Dan Bancroft raced away to score unopposed totally against the
run of play. The conversion put the home side in front for the first time.
A series of penalties against the visitors
allowed Crocs to come back into the game. Good field position from a penalty
allowed Crocs to drive over to increase their lead. Pontefract then allowed
Crocs to settle and number 8 Stuart Hill was allowed far too much time on the
ball to get the home side moving repeatedly forward.
Pontefract regrouped and Jake Brady in
particular began to take the ball up well. Matty Hargreaves looked dangerous
each time he got the ball. A further penalty for offside was the final score of
the half and the visitors turned to a 15-11 deficit.
tough game was expected. Warm still conditions although ideal
for spectators again made for hard work for the players. Crossleyans compact
ground was also hard underfoot.
Half Time 15-11
After the break the home side made a
definite change in tactics with both teams suffering in the heat. Long kicks to
touch were the order of the day and Pontefract having to return the ball.
Tactically the home side having the upper hand.
An early try for the Crocs stand off put
daylight between the teams and Pontefract well on the back foot. Two rapid
penalties and a try closed the game.
A yellow card for the home sides Terry
Michael allowed Pontefract some dominance but it was too late to make any
impact. A disappointing result for Pontefract who
enjoyed early dominance but allowed silly errors to creep into their play. Hibbert
and Walker along with highly rated forward Jake Brady did well for Pontefract.
Eaves again the outstanding player.

Saturday 8/9/07 Pontefract v Driffield -North 2 East
Pontefract opened the 2007 campaign with a
home game against last years high flyers Driffield. On a hot sunny afternoon
conditions were ideal for open running rugby but exhausting for the forwards.
Pontefracts extended warm up surely was a little too much in the heat?
Pontefract started really badly allowing
Driffield to score with a minute on the clock without touching the ball. A
string of silly infringements allowed Driffield early dominance and a second
score from the young visiting stand off after poor home defence opened up a
12-point deficit.
Pontefract then got into their stride
superbly led by the outstanding Derek Eves. A series of breaks from
Pontefracts speedy backs came to nought after unforced errors by the home side
in dropped passes. Thorpe and Hargreaves both making excellent line breaks.
After wasting several opportunities Driffield turned the tables and a surge up
field resulted in yet another score after more poor defensive work.
Pontefract then pulled out all the stops
and dominated the next 30 minutes of play. A deliberate knock on by the
visitors prevented a score and yellow card should really have resulted. The
visitors then showed their experience by slowing the rucks and pressurising the
referees decision making. Repeated killing of the ball although penalised did
not result in anybody off the pitch. Pontefract eventually scored after good
mauling from the Pontefract pack. Eves emerged with the ball to claim the first
points.
Half time Pontefract 5- Driffield 19
After the break it was all Pontefract from
the start. An early try from Eves after a good catch and drive narrowed the gap
with the conversion again missed.
Rich Scott then produced an excellent mid
field burst before handing on to Nev Bateman to finish in style neat the posts.
The two added point closed the gap to 17-19 and Pontefract well in ascendancy.
With Driffield having one player off for repeated infringements the balance of
the game was firmly back with the home team.
Good field position then saw Pontefract
pressing the visitors line from an attacking line out. Carl Smith was blatantly
pulled down but the refereed ruled a legal challenge. A mystery to the home
side who clearly had the edge in the mauls. The resultant loose ball was taken
up field where a dubious offside decision gave the visitors a further easy
3points. Pontefract continued to press but Driffield finished as they started
with two rapid fire tries to close the match.
Best for Pontefract Eves who was
outstanding and Bateman who defended very well out wide. Plenty of positives
for the home side but application will have to be improved to make an impact in
this league.
Final score Pontefract 17-Driffield 34.
9/9/06 Pontefract v Keighley
Pontefract commenced their
Yorkshire
one campaign with a high scoring win over opponents Keighley. Pontefract from
the kick-off took the game to Keighley. Keighley strayed off-side and were attempting
to slow the
ball down to stay on terms.Initially the visitors managed to contain the home
side, but
one too many offsides tested the referee`s patience and prop Evan Griffin was
yellow carded. From the penalty with eight minutes on the clock winger
Michael Bateman went over in the corner, the conversion was missed. Pontefract`s
front row of Dave
Laverick, Andy Smith and Matt Williams dug in at the scrums to contain their opposite
numbers
weight advantage. Pontefract prop Dave Laverick broke through the defence
making ground but was adjudged by the referee to be holding onto the ball in
the tackle. Keighley converted from the resulting penalty with thirteen minutes
gone. Keighley`s no7 was sin -binned, And Pontefract`s forwards created the
next try with a drive to the line and Matt Williams crashed over for the try.
Andy Dean converted. Mathew Cox for the visitors scored a second
penalty.Pontefract`s line out possesion was a highlight and Lock Carl Smith
rang the changes to good effect.Pontefract`s no 8 Derek Eves exploited the slow
cover and made the break from the base of the Scrum opened up the defence and
centre Tommy Archer raced forty metres to score the try in the corner.
Half time Pontefract 17 Keighley 6.
Lowery received from the lineout, Smith, Eves, and
Scott combined to set up the drive drawing in the flanks to leave Pontefract`s
backs to move the ball out to
winger Bateman who scored the try, Dean converted. The home sides organised effort
further diluted the visitors
resolve. Lock`s Carl Smith and John Fradgely along with the back row made deep
inroads into the Keighley
half and opened up the flagging defence
the back row support put in Tommy Archer to score the try .
Nick Dykes came on along with Andy Merkin and prop Richard Maw , who added fresh
impetus.Archer went
through the gap with full back Andy Spears on hand to complete the move and score
the try under the posts. Andy Dean scored the
conversion. Andy Merkin made the half break from a keighley offside ith
winger Michael Bateman scoring his hattrick
and with Tommy Archer scoring the final try for his hattrick
with Micheal Bateman scoring the goal.

16/9/06 Malton &
Norton v Pontefract
Table topping Pontefract produced a resolute performance
against determined opposition to make it two wins from two in Yorkshire
OneMichael Bateman`s third try treble of the campaign was the feature of
a fine victory over newly promoted Malton.Ponte punishedMaltons nervous start
within three minutes, with winger
Mathew Hargreaves going over in the corner after good support play from Lock
John Fradgley, with Andy Dean converting. The visitors pack took the initiative
and made good ground from third and fourth phase , when halves Rich Fletcher
and Dean spotted the cover commited, switching the play wide paid off with
Bateman`s first try of the game. Malton were heavily reliant on stand off Chris
Crebber ,when Ponte`s backs over cooked the effort, the Aussie looped around to
send in fellow countryman Cameron Madden at the corner. It Prompted Ponte to
tighten their grip in the midfield, with John Lowery, Rich Scott and Derek Eves
pestering Malton`s halves. And on 25 minutes the lead was extended
as centre Nick Dykes half break sent in the supporting No8 Eves crashing over.
Dean`s conversion made the score 19-5. The home side staged a big
effort to keep in contention, particularly through there front five , and the
visitors front row of Dave Laverick, Andy Smith and Matt Williams had their
hands full, as did full-back Simon Spears. Malton finished the half
on top but could not profit and when Lowery took clean line out ball and Eaves
drove up-field to isolate full-back Madden, Bateman was in support for a
try under the posts. A touchdown in the corner cut the gap to 16
points but Ponte, with fly-half Dean producing some punishing kicks, were not
to be denied. Rich Taylor and hooker Andy Merkin added fresh legs
off the bench before a Dean penalty and a third try for Bateman, who
intercepted to race in from 40 metres, completed the scoring. Pontefract host

Pontefract v Old Brodleans Pontefract notched up a further win against newly promoted
Old Brodleans in a closely fought game at Moor Lane.Pontefract made an
uncharacteristically sloppy start leading to early pressure from the visitors
big forwards. It was clear from the outset that the rucks and mauls were going
to be closely contested. This lead to the referee being quick to produce yellow
cards as a result of infringements in this area. Brods Jackson and Pontes
Taylor the first to have ten minutes respite. The game moved from one 22 to the other with both sides
unable to retain position and possession. Hooker Andy Merkin picked out lock
Carl Smith at line out which was pulled down, Ponte then losing possession from
the subsequent penalty. Brods enjoyed an extended period of possession with Shaw
at
scrum half spreading the ball wide before darting over himself near the posts.
Jamie Bloem converted to make the score 0-7 to the visitors. Pontefract responded
immediately with Fletcher at Scrum half
getting his forwards moving forward. Brods hooker Townend was the next for the
sin bin after diving over to kill Ponte ball, deserving of his subsequent
yellow card. The following scrum led to Pontes first score from player coach
and number 8 Derek Eves on 31 minutes. Andy Dean levelled the scores 7 apiece
with his neat conversion. With Andy Dean spinning the ball wide Tim Williamsons
half
break lead to a further penalty to Ponte for offside. Dean took the three
points, which was quickly countered by a Bloem penalty at the other end for a
10-10 half time score. After the break Fradgely, Scott, Lowery and Smith all made
good yards for Ponte leading to another penalty for offside. Matt Hargreaves
quick tap penalty lead to another infringement this time in kicking range. Dean
took advantage making it 13-10 to the home side. Bloem at outside half for Brods
kicked for territory in the
second half with the wind behind him. The game moved from backwards and
forwards with Ponte always seeming to have the upper hand. Replacements for Ponte were Matt Williams and Andy Smith at
Prop and hooker, a late replacement saw Thorpe taking the place of Tim
Williamson at centre. Carl Smith was very obviously pulled down at an attacking
line out leading to the final penalty points by Dean. Some late pressure was applied
by Brods with Spears pulling
off a fine try saving tackle in his own 22.The game petered out with Pontefract
controlling the match

not able to kill the game with the final score 16-10 to the home side.

Pontefracts continued
improvement under head coach Derek Eves allied to good team spirit gave them a
platform from which to gain an important victory over fellow league
contenders York Both teams had early

Yorks heavier pack withheld
the home teams efforts as they relentlessly attacked the gain line. A turnover

Yorkscrum half Arkle darted over for the

opportunity to put scrum half Richard Fletcher over near the posts

upper hand at this stage with superior fitness a factor. Fletcher moving the
ball well from scrum half allowed Fradgely, Lowery and Eves to create space for
Spears at pace from full back. Spears timed his pass perfectly to winger
Bateman who finished in style. Substitute Tim Williamson missed the conversion
leaving the score at 25-14 to Ponte.Spears, archer and Williamson
created further opportunities and Bateman finished the scoring stepping inside

7/10/06 Sandal v Pontefract There have only been two games
between these two local rivals in the past 12 yrs. Pontefract were victorious
in 2004, Sandal won in 1994. In this first league game between the two sides
Pontefract continued theyre impressive start to the season with a comfortable
away win to stay top of the table and unbeaten.Pontefract made a number of
changes with Rich Taylor in at prop, Rich Scott making a welcome return at open
side and Dave Thorpe appearing at outside half. The game started at a fast pace
with Pontefract moving repeatedly through the phases to put Sandal on the back
foot. Sandal dug in manfully and weathered the initial storm, but after seven
minutes half the three quarters ventured offside to prevent a certain try. Nev
Bateman on rare kicking duty kicked the ensuing penalty. Sandal then conceded
a further
penalty for killing the ball as Pontefract pressed. Dave Thorpe gained field
position with a fine touch kick. From the resulting line out lock Carl Smith
secured excellent line out ball, which the pack drove over for the try. Bateman
added the extra points for the conversion.Pontefracts enthusiasm gifted a

well in the front row exchanges. Smiths line out work also stood out.Sandal

the home side and gained a penalty after Nick Dykes made a determined run.

Determined work from Jon Lowery allowed Fletcher to release Matt Hargreaves who

14/10/06 Pontefract v Scarboro
In perfect conditions at Moor
Lane Pontefract continued winning ways against bottom of the league Scarboro.
In an entertaining but somewhat disjointed game the home side never looked like
losing but also struggled to dominate proceedings. The home pack was given a
difficult time by their opposite numbers particularly at set pieces. An early
shoulder injury to prop Rich Taylor impacted heavily on the home scrummage,
Taylor manfully
struggling on until after half time. The visitors had several players
sin binned for repeated infringements at the ruck and could easily have had
more sidelined for similar offences. The frequent penalties did nothing to aid
any continuity from either side.Scarboro scored the first points
for an early penalty at the ruck for holding on quickly negated by Andy Dean
for the home side for a similar offence. Scarboro were denied the lead when a
further penalty attempt hit the upright.Andy Dean having his best game
this season then made an excellent break from half way before switching the
ball inside to the ever present terrier like Fletcher to romp over near the
posts. Dean goaled to give the home side a clear advantage. After the break an
excellent
midfield move from the visitors saw a converted try under the posts put them
right back in the game. A well worked ball in their
home twenty two by Jonny Lowery and Tommy Archer then gave Dave Thorpe the
opportunity to scamper 60 metres before handing on to flying winger Simon
Spears for the best try of the match. From here Pontefract never looked liked
they were in trouble and were guilty of complacency allowing Scarboro into the
game to score a penalty try for collapsing at the scrum.Second half replacements
for
Ponte were Fradgley, Hargreaves and returning from long standing injury Nick
Vaughn Pontefract scored further tries
from Dykes and the prolific Bateman to wrap up the game. Scarboro will
certainly progress up the table with displays of this nature.

21/10/06 Wheatley
Hills V Pontefract On a perfect day for rugby on a
pristine pitch Pontefract had hoped to impose there free flowing brand of rugby
on the home side. Wheatley with their usual vigour and doggedness had other
ideas and made the table toppers work every inch of the way for
victory.Pontefract had first use of the slope, wind and sun pressurising the
home side into repeated penalties in a disjointed first half. After the sin
binning of their young prop prior to half time Pontefract took advantage, Andy
Smith scoring in the corner after good mauling from an attacking line out. Andy
Dean tagged the conversion added to two penalty goals to make the half time
score 13-3. The repeated stoppages for unforced knock ons from both teams and
frequent infringements provided poor entertainment. Both teams had a player sin
binned before half time for foul play. The second half followed a similar
pattern. Wheatley worked hard and edged the half 15-10. The best try of the
half was an excellent solo effort from Simon Spears from 40 yards after Tim
Williamson handed on after a neat side step to give Spears room on the outside
to
manoeuvre.Wheatleys best work was reserved for the final 10 minutes with
Pontefract down to 14 after Derek Eves was sin binned. Pontefract were never
behind and always looked like winners.
Best for Pontefract were Spears
and Williamson behind the scrum, Scott at open side and Richard Maw making a
welcome return in the front row.

28/10/06 Pontefract V
Sale FC Meeting Sale FC for the first
time in the EDF Senior Vase competition 2nd round Pontefract continued their
unbeaten start to the season. On a perfect autumn day both sides played
expansive and ambitious rugby which was not reflected in the final score line.
Sale who play in the
Lancs./Cheshire league one have enjoyed a reasonable start to the season remaining
unbeaten at home. Standing 5th in their league this tie was always going to be
a difficult fixture for the home side.Pontefract started well and
failed to take advantage of two early penalties in front of the posts. The
option to run instead of taking three points proved misguided when the
Sale defence held out on
both occasions. This was a sign of things to come with the defence on both
sides dominating. With half backs Fletcher and Dean demanding quick ball
Pontefract repeatedly ran the ball well especially from deep through graceful
full back Simon Spears. Several times the home side were denied short of the
try line with Spears, Thorpe, Williamson and Archer all denied reasonable
chances through good defensive work from the visitors.Matt Hargreaves was an early
casualty, leaving the field on 15 minutes with a dead leg. Michael Bateman was
the replacement and having the clubs leading scorer returning after injury
hardly weakened the home side.First score to Pontefract came
via Spears. Nick Vaughn and Rich Scott supplied quick ball from a drive by
Dean, once Spears had the ball with 5 metres spare to the touchline a score was
inevitable. Spears was denied a further first half score by a superb chase back
by one of the
Sale
speedsters. Despite a regular tidy supply of ball from the forwards the only
other score in the first half was a penalty to the visitors leaving the score
at Half time 5-3
The second half followed a
similar pattern. Pontefract definitely had territorial advantage but failed to
get the early score required to open up the game.Pontefract scored an excellent
try from a set piece move when number 8 Eves peeled round the front taking a
well caught ball from Carl Smith and diving over in the corner. The failed
conversion left the game open. Matt Williams then had a
disallowed effort for a double movement before Dean closed the game with a
well-taken penalty. A late score by Christian Lilley
gave
Sale the
final say in entertaining game played in excellent spirit by both teams.Best for
Pontefract were Nick

was outstanding.

4/11/06 Pontefract v
BradfordSalem On another perfect
Autumn Saturday conditions at
Moor
Lane could not have been better for this top
of the table clash. Many thought that
Salemwere the
best team we faced last year and a keen contest was anticipated.
Pontefract had several changes due to injury including influential coach
Derek Eves who 'benched' due to a knee problem. From the start it
was obvious that
Salemwere employing a rush defence which proved to be hard
to breach throughout the game. An early infringement by the visitors
for stretching the offside rules in their eagerness to defend gave an
opportunity for Pontefract. The subsequent move was spoiled by crossing
and the impetus was lost.
Salemwere quickly on the attack with a well worked try by
Chris Luxton from a neat Paul Drake grubber kick. A feature of the match was
the tactical kicking of the visitors, which was much smarter than that of
the home side. Booth for
Salemadded
a penalty goal for a scrum infringement before Ponte hit back with a well taken
try by Simon Spears after a good drive by centre Nick Dykes (an
early replacement for Archer who took a knock to his shoulder). Dykes
repeatedly took the ball forward over the advantage line after his
introduction. The Ponte lineout was working well with Smith and Jonny Lowerey
providing quality ball from Andy Smith accurate throws. The visitors were
heavily penalised in the first period for killing the ball, (eventually
suffering 3 sin binnings for similar offences). To their credit they defended
superbly and went in 13-18 at half time after a well-worked forward try
goaled by Booth. (a knock on was unfortunately missed as the referee was
unsighted) After half time it was Pontes turn and the second half was
dominated by the home side. Thorpe
and Spears returned the defensive kicks with interest and the forwards piled on
the pressure.
Salem
managed to nudge further ahead with neat drop goal by Booth well
engineered positional by his forwards. Ponte hurled themselves forward and Dean
closed the gap with a penalty. With their first defeat of the campaign
looming Eves joined the fray to steady things. From a well worked mid -field
drive Andy Dean placed a pinpoint kick wide for the flying Nev Bateman to
collect and scorch over in the corner. Dean missed the conversion and the score
was level at 21 each.Dean had a last gasp penalty to win the match which fell
short leaving the game tied on full time.

11/11/06 Bridlington v Pontefract
Pontefract suffered their first
defeat of the season
Dukes Park
to traditionally difficult opponents Bridlington. The
weather conditions conspired to make playing open rugby as difficult as
possible with driving wind and rain arriving as the game began.Late withdrawals
due to injury of captain Nick Vaughn in the back row and outstanding scrum half
Rich Fletcher disrupted preparations. Vaughn in particular may be missing for
a
considerable peroiod with a recuurence of a shoulder injury. Rich Scott instead
of earning a rest from action returned to the back row and Dave Thorpe
deputised out of position for Fletcher. Brid were first on the
score sheet with a penalty from stand off Muru reliable as ever at stand off.
Ponte tried to play the ball too much in the early stages whilst the home side
played with the conditions much better. A missed tackle gave Brid the
opportunity to score the first try converted by Muru to give them a 10-0
advantage at half time. The first half was spoiled by the weather, which
dominated proceedings.Pontefract made a gritty start to the second half with
good efforts by Spears and Thorpe driving on the visitors forwards. Townend
got over the line for the visitors but failed to ground in the soft conditions.
Matt Hargreaves scored first to put Ponte back in the hunt with an unconverted
effort. Not to be denied the forwards ploughed on with Richard Maw
to the fore. Eves picked up from a scrum and good support from Fradgely created
space for Dean to put Bateman over in the corner, not surprisingly the attempt
at goal was missed. With Carl Smith starting to supply good lineout ball
Pontefract began to dominate the game but came unstuck with a Spears kick into
the wind held up and returned with interest by Brid before second row Alan
Tupaea supporting well scored the try. The missed conversion left the score at
15-10 in the last quarter. The last ten minutes was all Ponte but the conditions
and a lack of composure led to a lack of continuity and the score remained
unchanged.Bridlington had the best of the first half, Ponte the second. No
complaints from the visitors who will look to reverse the score line when

17/11/06 Pontefract v
West Leeds
In the 3rd round of the Vase
competition Pontefract played hosts to West Leeds from
Yorkshire
2. After a disappointing display at Bridlington the week previous Ponte were
looking to impose their game on unknown opponents. A fine sunny afternoon at
Moor Lane provided
ideal conditions for a fast open game of rugby. A relatively small crowd
witnessed a one sided affair with the visitors failing to bother the scorers.
This was not a reflection of their effort and credit must go to the young and
apparently inexperienced
WestPark team who genuinely
tried to the very end.
With several first team regulars missing Park struggled to contain the home
sides expansive brand of rugby. Pontefract shook off the shackles of the
intensity of league rugby and simply ran the ball from everywhere. With
excellent support play to keep the ball alive there was a steady and continuous
stream of tries from every possible area of the field.
Spears as ever looked graceful and deadly with ball in hand, his haul of five
tries could easily have been doubled. Matty Hargreaves making a welcome return
replacing injured top try scorer Nev Bateman was his elusive best picking up
three scores. Prop Dave Laverick will rarely run as far with ball in hand as he
did for
his 45-metre effort, but the pick of the scores had to be that of veteran
second row Dave Brady. Derek Eves made an excellent break in centerfield, (one
of many) but didnt have the legs to go 50 metres. Judging his offload to
absolute perfection he handed on to the supporting Brady to gallop over under
the posts. The combined ages of both players involved in the move provided a
vintage moment for the home supporters.
Best for the home side on a day when every pass seemed to stick were Spears,
Hargreaves, and Eves. Once again credit where it is due to the visitors for
sticking to their task to the end in difficult circumstances.
Pontefract return to league action next week against Huddersfield YMCA and will
be looking to up the intensity and effort to keep up the unbeaten home record
this season.

25/11/06 Pontefract V
Huddersfield Pontefract maintained their
unbeaten home run in a game marred by the on field conditions. Heavy overnight
rain turned the
Moor Lane
pitch into a gluepot, which negated any chance of free flowing and open rugby.
Huddersfieldprovided gritty opposition
and probably consider them selves unlucky not to have a share of the
spoils. The visitors started well and took an early lead with a try
from Number 8 Mark
Eastwood converted by fly half Chris Cowling. Pontefract looked to get
straight
back into things but every attempt to run the ball was spoiled by
dropped
passes or a failure to retain the ball in contact. A string of
penalties
against the visitors for hands in at the breakdown and entering the
mauls from
the side should really have culminated in a yellow card. The referee
displayed
some leniency and this perhaps led to some friction between both teams.
From a scrum five Derek Eves slid over, Deans conversion levelled the
score.
With Pontefract failing to secure good ball at the line the first half
degenerated into an arm wrestle dominated by the conditions. Pontefract
moved
further ahead with a class try from scrum half Rich Fletcher. Eves
picked up
deftly at the back of a five-metre scrum and drew the defence before
timing his
pass to perfection. This was the final score of the half with
Pontefract
turning around 12-7 in front. The second half was disappointing from
the spectators point of view with poor
kicking being the order of the day. Stuart Morton on the
Huddersfield
flank scored the pick of the days tries after scorching along the only piece of
reasonable ground on the far touchline to score in the corner. No conversion
left the scores tied. Simon Spears was injured making the tackle and was forced
to leave the field.
Pontefract took the points with a converted penalty by Dean after a period of
sustained pressure. Two late yellow cards for the visitors left them unable to
make any impression although a late long-range penalty chance was kicked for
touch rather than at goal. The oppositions scrumhalf was given a yellow card
for running into a maul and throwing a punch. A less lenient referee would
probably have given a straight red and his lack of discipline did nothing for
his teams efforts.

2/12/06 Pontefract v Ilkley
Pontefract travelled to Ilkley
looking to improve on their recent poor away form. Lacking two key figures in
coach Derek Eves along with top try scorer and stand in skipper Simon
Spears responsibility for leadership was a key factor in this latest defeat. From
the kick off Ponte looked
disjointed and lethargic. The Dalesmen looked exactly the opposite and well up
for the contest. An early attack repulsed by good forward defence led to an
early chance to break out for the visitors. A poor pass to nowhere gifted the
home side five points with two minutes on the clock. It was a lead that never
really looked like being threatened.Hooker Andy Smith had the best of
the scrummages winning an early ball against the head. This lead to a period of
pressure from Ponte resulting in a string of penalties. Failure to take the
points allowed the home side to dig in and eventually regain possession to
clear the threat.Ilkley played the conditions
better than the visitors repeatedly kicking for position to good effect. The
heavy conditions were not helpful for Pontes open running style and the home
side capitalised by piling numbers in at rucks and mauls further stifling the
game.A penalty for holding on in the tackle allowed a converted penalty to give
the home side an 8-0 half time lead. Dour fare for the spectators. In the second
half both teams
infringed with regular monotony at the breakdowns. Ilkley managed to break the
shackles with a good passage of open back play to cross in the corner for an
unconverted try. Pontefracts only points then
came from Dean with a penalty for diving in on the ball. There was only one
winner on the day with a long kick sticking in the mud and Ponte unable to
clear their line. Quick turnover benefited the home team who scored a further
unconverted try. A disappointing display from
Ponte full of errors and direction. Credit to Ilkley for their determination
and taking their chances. Pontefract 3

slippy with the pitch very wet.
From the kick off the ball squirted around in the mud and gave an indication
of problems to come for both sets of players. Both teams adapted well and the
match wasnt spoiled by unforced errors. Early scrummages went Pontefracts way
with the front row of Rich Taylor, Andy Merkin and Dave Laverick putting the opposition
under pressure. The early pressure culminated in an attacking five metre scrum Derek Eves worked
his magic to put Richard Fletcher in unopposed. A similar try to Fletchers last
effort showing the growing understanding between the two players. Dean missed
the difficult conversion. Kirby were straight back into the game with aggressive
intent from the kick off. The opposition stand off for some reason saw fit however
to continually kick away possession to the corners. A period of Kirby pressure
led to an offside penalty gifting the visitors three points.
Tim Williamson had a personal dual all afternoon with his opposite number Barton
and it took a good cover tackle on him from Jonny Lowerey to prevent a try after
a break at outside half. One of the few occasions Williamson wasnt on hand to
nail his opposite number. Derek Eves then made an excellent break before handing
on to Andy Dean. The supporting Simon Spears looked certain to score but his pace
was blunted by the sticky ground allowing a good tackle by his opposite number
to stop him in his tracks. A penalty for handling at the resultant ruck was kicked
by Dean to give the home side an 8-3 advantage. From this point the home side
never looked like being beaten. Immediately from the kick off Pontefract applied
the pressure and hands in the ruck led to a yellow for the visitors Blind side
Simon Dowker. The reliable Dean took the 3 points. With Matt Hargreaves and Nick
Cooper stranded like flies on sticky paper the game became a midfield arm wrestle.
With Eves in the side it was only a matter of time before a gap appeared around
the fringes for him to stride over for a typical personal try. Half time Ponte
21- Kirby Lonsdale 3.
The second half was a more even contest with the home side taking their foot
of the pedal. This allowed the visitors to enjoy some decent passages of play.
Resolute defence prevented any score however and against the run of play Dean
made a break before handing on to Williamson to stroll over. A late effort by
the visitors winger completed the scoring.
Best for Pontefract were Eves, Fletcher, Fradgely and the front row. Credit to
the visitors who played an attractive style of rugby and never gave up enjoying
the last word.
Pontefract 26 v Kirby Lonsdale 8
16/12/06 Pontefract v Bridlington In their final league game of 2006 Pontefract were looking for revenge on traditionally
difficult opponents who inflicted the first loss of the campaign in the away fixture.
A win would also secure top spot at the turn of the year.Pontefract produced a
robust display which more than matched the visitors usual aggressive and in your
face style of rugby. The very first scrum was a benchmark with the big Brid 8
putting on the pressure. Pontefract held the shove and then nudged the scrum backwards
laying down their own marker.
The heavy conditions and resultant greasy ball did nothing to help free flowing
rugby. There was no doubt from the start this was not going to be a high scoring
game. A missed touch kick from Tim Williamson was returned by Brid and a loose
passage of play in their own 22 led to turnover ball for Brid to score in the
corner. The conversion was missed but after only 4 minutes the visitors had the
advantage.
Great work from the Pontefract pack put the visitors on the back foot leading
to a penalty attempt for Dean, which went wide. With the whole side putting the
effort in to stop Brid capitalising on the early score Pontefract were not to
be denied however. Nick Cooper found touch from a penalty setting up an attacking
line out well won by Carl Smith. Scrum half Fletcher directed his forwards in
the drive for the line enabling Derek Eves to peel off and score the try. Dean
missed with the conversion.
Brid number 8 Richardson was yellow carded for persistent infringement. Unfortunately
Richard Fletcher then received the same punishment for showing his frustration
at the visitors slowing the ball at the rucks. A further attempt at goal by Nick
Cooper failed in the greasy and difficult conditions. Brid scrum half Bargh was
then yellow carded for a stamping offence.
Simon Spears left the field and Nick Cooper moved to full back, Hargreaves was
introduced on the wing but in fairness these two quick and elusive players were
not to have any impact in the conditions underfoot. With the Ponte back row of
Eves, Scott and Lowerey to the fore Pontefract deserved to score before half time
but frustratingly didnt manage the breakthrough. Half time 5-5
Pontefract started the second half brightly with a couple of good drives from
Rich Maw and the consistent Matt Williams but a couple of penalties saw them defending
their own line. A Brid knock on led to a solid Ponte scrum, which allowed Nick
Cooper to clear the threat.A midfield break from Nick Dykes well supported by
Williamson and Brid coming offside thwarted Dean. Dean took the three points with
aplomb for the final score.
The home side who should have scored more points to consolidate the win dominated
the last ten minutes.
Best for Pontefract were the entire pack for a sterling effort.

23/12/06 Pontefract v Knottingley (Yorks Shield Round 2)
This second round game in the Yorkshire shield eventually got underway after
numerous delays. It seems a considerable period of time since Pontefract played
Knottingley in a proper competitive game.
Pontefract made a number of changes resting key players and due to the inevitable
injuries at this stage of the season. With conditions very sticky underfoot the
game was dominated by the forwards and was not much of a spectacle for the spectators.
Nonetheless with Knottingley putting in a sterling effort the home side had to
work hard to get the win.
Knottingley kicked off and there was no advantage to either side on a still cold
winter afternoon, with the floodlights on from the start. Pontefract started well
and James Parry had a couple of early runs at his opposite number making good
yards. A couple of high tackles on Parry in the first half went unpunished but
Knottingley had one player sin binned for continual hands in at the ruck.
First score to Pontefract came from Tim Williamson who was put into a huge gap
by Andy Dean who tagged on the conversion. The continual kicking at stand off
by Stanifield wasted any ball that Knottingley had. The forwards were working
well however and Lowerey, Eves and Fradgeley in the back row all had to work hard
defensively.
A further score from Spears from a well-worked scrum inevitably well engineered
by Derek Eves picking and supplying Fletcher with time and space put the home
side well clear. Dean added the goal and from here on the home side never looked
like being beaten. Half time Pontefract 14-Knottingley 0
After the break Knottingley stuck aggressively to their task and the home side
were guilty of taking their foot of the pedal. The home side were camped for a
long period in their own half but the visitors struggled to breach the defence.
Knottingley then had a player sent off after a seriously high shot on James Parry.
A flurry of punches was subsequently exchanged before the red card was issued.
The resulting penalty was goaled by Dean.
Despite this set back Knottingley fought back and got just rewards with a well
taken try from an attacking scrum for the final points of the game. A typical
hard fought local derby dominated by the forward tussle.
Pontefract 17 Knottingley 5
6/01/07 Pontefract v Bradford Salem Pontefract played their first fixture of 2007 away at fellow promotion hopefuls
Bradford Salem. In typical wet and windy conditions Pontefracts new year prospects
were dented with a below par second half performance against a more focused and
coordinated home side.
Pontefract started brightly and took the game immediately to Salem. The early
set pieces went the home sides way and this proved to be a feature of the game.
Salem were first on the score sheet with a penalty for holding on against Richard
Maw.
Salem then started kicking for position and the ball was returned with interest
by Simon Spears, Spears continually lacked support for his running from his fellow
three quarters. With some gritty defence from the home side Pontefract failed
to make any inroads and the half time score remained 3-0
Pontefract began the second half immediately on the back foot as the home stand
off Booth was given too much time on the ball. An early Booth penalty increased
the home sides lead, and the same player shortly afterwards dropped a goal.
Pontefract were still in the game and two substitutions were made with Nick Cooper
and Rich Taylor replacing Matt Hargreaves and Matt Williams. Nick Cooper was then
undone by a cruel bounce, which was fly hacked on by his opposite number. Fly
half Booth won the chase and got the touch down which he also converted.
A late penalty for holding on against Rich Fletcher allowed Booth to convert
for the final points.
Bradford Salem (Booth) 19-Pontefract 3
13/01/07 Pontefract v Wheatley
Pontefract bounced back from previous weeks
disappointing displays with a fine display of open attractive rugby. For the
first time in several weeks the pitch was firm at Moor Lane and
the weather was fine. There is little doubt that these conditions assist
Pontefracts progressive style of rugby.
Pontefract made three changes with Merkin
in at hooker, Rich Taylor at prop and Andy Dean to stand off. From the start
Pontefract took the game to traditionally awkward opposition. First points fell
to the boot of Dean for offside at the ruck. From this point on the home side
dominated proceeding with a succession of well-run tries. First up was Matt
Hargreaves after good line out ball from Jonny Lowery was worked across filed
by Fletcher Dean and Williamson. With Smith and Maw producing some rugged
defence to unsettle the visitors, Simon Spears then crossed after good work
from Hargreaves.
With the home pack firing on all cylinders
a succession of tries followed firstly from Hargreaves, then Nev Bateman
crossing after supporting the same player well. Derek Eves then crossed for a
trade mark try from a well worked catch and drive. Half time left the visitors
38-3 to the good and the game effectively over as a contest.
Further tires after the break from Spears,
and Eves allowed Pontefract to make changes and take their foot of the pedal.
James Parry had another decent run out and tireless Rich Scott took respite
replaced by Fradgely
The visitors scored two late tries in the
corner to leave the result at Pontefract 50-Wheatley Hills 15
The whole side deserve credit for playing with
attitude and returning to the running rugby, which has worked so well all
season. Dean kicked well and Spears looked particularly dangerous running from
deep. Given fair weather and good pitches Pontefract always look unlikely to
lose. Everyone at Moor lane is hoping for a prolonged dry spell !

20/1/07Pontefract v Malton EDF vase Round 5 Playing away for
the first time in this competition Ponte travelled to Malton without half the
first choice pack. Captain Nick Vaughn although still injured volunteered to
bench. Influential wing forward Rich Scott
pulled out late because of injury and the team enforcers of Richie Maw, Matt
Williams and Andy Smith were skiing. The missing size weight and aggression of
the latter three were to be deciding factors on the day.
On a windy day
with occasional squalls the match was a patchy affair with mistakes dominating
proceedings. Both sides tried to play open rugby to their credit but it was
poor fare for the paying spectators.
Pontefract
started well and gained an early lead from the boot of Andy Dean. Shortly after
the restart the visitors pack drove the ball over the try line but couldnt
get the touch down. Lack of concentration at the subsequent scrum allowed the
home side to clear.
Cameron Madden
then scored a good individual try from 50 metres out after a midfield break.
Inevitably Cooke goaled.
Malton were
guilty of closing the gaps at the line but were never penalised, Andy Merkin
did well to hit his targets but the lineouts were disjointed to say the least.
Chris Creber at fly half for the home side was never placed under any pressure
all afternoon; Rich Scott will no doubt be looking to change this state of
affairs for the home league match later this year. Creber was allowed to kick
at will and made Pontefract pay repeatedly for allowing him so much time on the
ball.
A late penalty
for Malton against the industrious Merkin allowed the home side breathing space
with a 10-3 interval lead.
After the
restart Malton extended their lead after a loose midfield pass was scooped up
to concede a really soft try. Cooke obliged with the conversion to extend the
lead to17-3
Pontefract
rallied with Dean and Fletcher pushing things forward. With Nick Dykes driving
the ball up well in midfield an opportunity was eventually created out wide for
Nev Bateman to force his way over in the corner. Dean had no chance from the
touchline with the conversion into the very strong wind.
For a brief
period after this Pontefract was right back in the game stretching the home
defence wide. After a ruck situation on the club touchline three players were
red carded, the home props Gwilliam and Turnbull along with Jonny Lowery. The
incident arose due to a cynical piece of stamping by the home prop. Undoubtedly
this offence was a straight red card as the stamp was aimed at the head of a
Pontefract player lying trapped on the wrong side. The other two players were
very unfortunate and a yellow for these two would have been more appropriate.
After this
incident Pontefract dominated and should have won the game. Simon Spears scored
a good unconverted try after good work from Matt Hargreaves. Derek Eves then
crossed after Carl Smith secured good lineout ball. At 17-18 the game was there
only for the visitors to lose as injury time was n
